Kenneth Washburn’s sister-in-law suggested he get a degree in cosmetology.
“I was initially unaware of my interest in the field, but she recognized it early
on because I was very particular about how I did my hair when I was younger,” he said.
“When I discovered that College of DuPage offered a degree in cosmetology, it felt
like the perfect opportunity. It allowed me to pursue my passion while also helping
me advance my career in the education side of cosmetology.”
Having been an educator for 20 years, Washburn enrolled at COD and gained the skills
for success in a new career.
“COD played a crucial role in helping me meet my goals. I have always aspired to be
the director of education for a company in the beauty industry, and my time at COD
provided me with the confidence and foundation I needed,” he said. “My experiences
at COD further solidified my ability to lead and teach in this field.”
After earning his Associate in Applied Science in cosmetology, Washburn is the principal
of education for the Wahl Barber Academy and Pivot Point Academy. He would like to
pursue bachelor’s and master’s degrees in adult education or training and development.
Having successfully embarked on his career in cosmetology education, Washburn encourages
others boldly pursue what they want.
“If there is something you feel passionate about or a goal you want to achieve, go
for it,” he said. “Life is too short to have regrets or wonder ‘what if.’ I’ve learned
that if you diligently pursue your dreams, things will fall into place when the time
is right.
“COD has been instrumental in helping me gain the confidence I needed to pursue these
goals and become the best version of myself. The College is very supportive, the instructors
are excellent and the tutoring center is beneficial. The Cosmetology program, while
intensive, prepares students well for the real world in a relatively short period.
I highly recommend COD for those looking to pursue cosmetology.”
